I just read a post on a different forum about this person who got the game early. Possibly faking it, but it sounds like it's legit. Definately no story spoilers....just free roam descriptions. It definately makes me want the game more...here it is...
Just got my copy of Red Dead Redemption from a store that broke the street date. I already spent roughly around six hours into the game. This is easily one of the greatest games I have ever played. Remember playing Grand Theft Auto III and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for the very first time? That's how I felt when I began to play RDR. In fact, RDR is so much better than GTA! RDR has some of the best visuals you will ever see in a sandbox game or in a video game. The graphics, physics and animations are top-notch. The gameplay and music are stellar. Red Dead Redemption is definitely game of the year.
I spent the first hour doing some of the main missions. The first few missions are more like tutorials teaching you how to play and such but it is also relevant to the main story. I spent most of my time wandering around the town observing the NPCs. Unlike GTA IV, the NPCs in RDR actually have their very own lives. You can listen to conversations between or among NPCs and see how they interact with each other. I watched one NPC threaten another with a dagger because the other NPC was sleeping with his wife. Things escalated a minute later as the other NPC grabbed his revolver but the NPC with the dagger shanked him. I couldn't stop laughing when this NPC repeatedly stabbed this guy to death.
I encountered a lot of random occurrences. Some of them I didn't really notice until I heard gunshots, screaming and NPCs frantically running around and taking cover as well as horses acting wild. Bandits often show up time to time and you will see them with their guns drawn and robbing other NPCs. I didn't bother intervening as there were lawmen around the place. It was really awesome to watch lawmen and bandits go out at each other. After the gunfire stopped, I went ahead and looted the dead bandits. I only got a few dollars from these guys...
I decided to venture the outskirts of one of the towns you visit early in the game. I came across a campsite filled with dead bodies and vultures eating their corpses. They weren't bandits but civilians (among the dead are women). I looked around for something to loot but only to find a young beaten looking lady in distress. She explained what happened and asked if I can give her a ride back to town. She gets on my horse and immediately rode off, leaving me stranded. I felt stupid... Especially when I tried lassoing her and missed! The nearest town was about 10 minutes on foot. I was lost and didn't know where to go but I just went ahead and followed my map.
About 5 minutes on foot, I found a NPC on a horse. He briefly greeted me as I lounged my lasso around his torso. His horse was out of control after I lassoed him. I managed to tame his horse and I dragged him around for quite a bit. I found a pack of wolves near the woods and I let go of the dead NPC on the lasso to the wolf pack. I finally went back to town only to be troubled by the lawmen. Apparently the young lady framed me for the murders! What a *****!
I tried hunting for awhile and dang it's fun! I hunted down an elk but only to be attacked by a pack of wolves hunting the elk as well! There are also other hunters (NPCs) that are hunting animals. I usually get my guns from them since they get killed by other wild animals (e.g. wolves, a charging buffalo or a mountain lion). After claiming my prey, I went ahead and skinned the animal and sold the skin for a few bucks. It ain't much but enough to buy more rounds for my guns.
I can't play online at the moment as the servers are currently down. Anyway, Red Dead Redemption is one of the best games I have ever played! After I'm done posting, I'm going back playing for countless hours but I will be here answering some of your questions!
