*****************END GAME SPOILERS*********** ****
personally i can't say i think the ending should have been done very differently at all. it makes sense that the government would hire john to kill all his former friends and then kill him. the government isn't just killing him for what he is, they are killing him for what he was and what he did, granted he reformed himself but to some extent he still represented what dutch stood and fought for.
i admit i wasn't expecting john to die and that really gutted me , at the same time a common theme throughout the game is redemption. john looks for it in so many ways, his own personal philosophies, brief mentions of god/ the good book, the coming society and the changes it'll bring with it, hell even his actions. john wants to believe as hard as he can that he can be forgiven for the mistakes he has made in his life and the fact of the matter is all of it comes back to chase him down.
i really can't imagine a way for the ending to have been done better that isn't going against the themes of the game. nor the character of john and what he stands for, the hope that a man can be forgiven for past transgressions, the hope that somebody can learn from their mistakes and try to fix them. and even when he is forgiven in a way, he still is forced to pay for his actions.
sorry about the wall of text but how would you have wanted the ending to work TC ?
*********end of spoilers**********

It really couldn't have ended any other way, anything less than Johns death would have been insulting to our intelligence.

When it first happened I was in shock. Called a couple people to vent some steam, and then thought about it a while. It does make perfect sense. Everyone else in the game (except maybe the MacFarlanes), tried to screw you over, and this was no different.
It just really sucked because I was really getting in to the "Ranch Life" getting 40 or so wolves a night, and getting a herd of buffalo on the way to Blackwater everyday. I guess we will just have to deal with playing as that punk kid.

I think it would have been better if they did 2 different endings. First show the scene where John is holed up in the barn and tells his family to leave. Shortly before he opens the door Ross kinda figures it's a done deal, claps the dust off his hands, and rides off, flicking a cigar as he goes. Then go into the ending factor. One where if you don't manage to kill all the marshals, then it sticks with original, where you as Jack can kill Ross. The second where you do manage to kill the marshals, hunt down Ross, and see the terror in his eyes as you kill him, or better yet throw his hog-tied wife down in front of him, kill her, then him, or another option, forgive him. Bam, cut to credits.
