Too much ambition can be the death of a man…or of many, if he can persuade them to follow.
As soon as Rockstar announced the first details of the multiplayer aspect of this game, I envisioned a community where like minded gamers would gather, socialize, and play this game without having to deal with the trolls and lowlifes that plague the GTA4 multiplayer boards. At the heart of that community would be The Gray Ghosts. They would be a group of mature, fun, and respectful gamers who wanted to be able to enjoy this game without having to deal with 10 year olds squealing over microphones, people pretending to be wasted, people spawn camping and people who generally just liked making other gamer’s lives miserable for fun. They were going to be gamers that I would be proud to play with. Originally, I was just doing this for Xbox, but I received a lot of requests to do this for PS3. I wanted PS3 users to have the same chance to play this game with a group of mature gamers.
I went about laying the foundations for what would be this site and what would be this posse. I spent months on message boards, fan sites, and gaming sites preaching the gospel of the Gray Ghosts. Sure there was the occasional wonderful guy who tried to make my life hell, but the majority of people over 18 saw this as a chance to be able to enjoy a game with other adults and not have to worry about what kind of jerks they would find on random servers. The idea caught on.
I needed someone to help me on the PS3 side of things because I couldn’t run this site and two posses. Nuahs came here to start his own posse, called The Lone Wolves. He tried to get people to join him. I tried to help him. I even tried to create a logo for him even though I was very busy doing my own stuff for this site. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t get anyone to join his posse. Finally, he gave up and asked me if he could join the Gray Ghosts. I agreed to let him join since he seemed to be a nice guy and enthused about this game.
The guy who was the original leader of the PS3 Ghosts stepped down because he wasn’t going to be able to be active enough. I asked Nuahs to take over that spot because he was an active member of the board and showed enthusiasm for the game. At some point, Nuahs stopped caring about the Gray Ghosts and what brought us all together and started trying to build The Lone Wolves 2.0 in Gray Ghost’s clothing. He never looked at the other Gray Ghosts boards, never communicated to me or his fellow captains, never tried to be a part of the bigger community. Instead of bouncing ideas off of other leaders in this posse and getting feedback, he caused chaos on this board by posting “this is how we are doing things” one day and then “I changed my mind this is how we are doing things now” the next. He would sticky almost every post he made. He was trying to go in a thousand different directions at once and it just seemed like this division was being drug around at his beck and call. He disregarded the rules of the board set up to make things fun for all of us (posting on other people's recruiting threads, wanting to post spoilers, etc.). When he showed no interest in participating in community events, but rather only in those he planned; I had to step in. I did not fire Nuahs. I asked him to consider if he really wanted to be a part of something bigger than himself and he decided he wanted to do things his own way or no way at all. I offered to let him start his own posse if he wanted to stay as part of this community. I had no ill will toward him.
He agreed to do that, but he seemed to have the idea that he would take all of the Gray Ghosts to his new posse. He thought he was going to come on this board and basically post “Hey guys, we are moving to a new posse and it will be just like this one” and that would be ok. What Nuahs failed to remember was how when he tried to recruit for his first posse he had no members and when I let him become a leader in this posse suddenly tons of people wanted to join. The Gray Ghosts had already established a reputation in this community. We were one of the first sites posted on Rockstar’s list of their favorite fan sites. Devs from Rockstar are even members of this very forum. The Gray Ghosts are popular because of the ideals we hold as gamers. That is who we are and what we are about. That is what drew most of you here. It is bigger than any one person’s ego.
I asked Nuahs not to poach people from this posse for his new one. I told him to set up a board and start recruiting just like all the other posses on this board. Just like the Gray Ghosts did to get to be one of the largest posses in the Red Dead Community. I told him if any of you wanted to follow him, you would. You are all adults here. You are free to do as you want, but just like I wouldn’t let any of you go onto the Ponchos board and start asking their members to join us instead, I didn’t think it was fair to have a Nuahs do that here.
He couldn’t live with that and has stooped to being the kind of player that I created this community to get away from. I don’t want to play with people who throw temper tantrums. He is sending out messages on PSN to all of you asking you to join his new board. I will leave that up to you. I just thought it was right to let you know what happened and let you make up your own minds.
This posse will continue to be what it was meant to be. It is a place to relax, have fun and play this game with mature people. Nuahs has already caused the kind of grade school, childish drama I am trying so hard to avoid on this forum.
We will continue to provide you with the high quality multiplayer events. The Meet and Greet and Shoot’em Dead in the Streets is this Sunday. We have just put a teaser out for Historical Gunfights of the Old West. We will be recreating the conditions of some of the most infamous shootouts in the history of the American West. We will also be announcing some inner posse and posse vs. posse events as soon as we have had a chance to really see what all we can do in Multiplayer. I hope that you will continue to support the Gray Ghosts and be a part of this wonderful community. If you choose not to, I wish you the best.
